Abstract

The issue addressed in this paper is the image of Kuwait in  the Spanish press. The objective is to see how the informative discourse on Kuwait is articulated through the lexicon, syntactic structures, discourse scheme and thematic comparison. This representation in the discourse is framed in a specific historical and relational context, described in the introduction that deals with the international position of Kuwait and the socioeconomic relations between Spain
and Kuwait. Furthermore, it is questioned whether the information units respond more to an imaginary than to veracity and how Kuwait's otherness is treated in the media construction. In order to answer this question, the study uses a mixed methodology: qualitative analysis of an opinion article (2001) and quantitative analysis of news published in a limited period of time (2000-2002). The content of the informative units is analyzed through the prism of CDA (critical discourse analysis), frame theory and ethnography. As a sample of the quantitative analysis, graphs summarizing the classification by topics are
presented; finally, the content analysis and the conclusion of the comparison between the concomitant subjects in the qualitative and quantitative analysis are offered. The result shows which informative poles are relevant in the construction of the informative discourse on Kuwait.
