Main Article Content
Abstract
The central theme of this research originates from the personal interest in proving that any social manifestation can be analyzed and described through language, including manifestations of artistic creation, such as song lyrics and their semantic contents. Therefore, in this article, a chronological and comparative sociolinguistic analysis of the lyrics of the songs of the Peruvian rock band Rio will be carried out. First, the band’s musical career has been divided into two stages, which facilitates the analysis to be carried out. First, the band's thematic proposal and its variation in the two stages will be
presented. Then, we will proceed to analyze the style of the discourse, using as an example the fragments of the selected songs. From this analysis, the chronological variation in the band's style will be demonstrated. Likewise, the use of specific forms in the lyrics of the songs, according to each stage, will
be analyzed. Finally, the change in the medium or channel of the message of the songs from the first to the second stage will be presented. It is concluded that extralinguistic factors, such as social context, age, level of education, among others, are factors that have a great influence on the speakers and their communicative intention.
